Event Description

The All European Academies (ALLEA) General Assembly is the annual meeting of ALLEA Member Academies. It convenes Academies of Sciences and Humanities from 40 countries across the Council of Europe region. The General Assembly programme consists of various parts: scientific symposia, the award ceremony of the All European Academies Madame de Staël Prize for Cultural Values, as well as the annual business meeting.

The event seeks to provide a platform for connecting excellence in Europe by bringing together high-ranking European policymakers, scientists, scholars as well as the interested public to debate on the most pressing issues faced by science and research.

The Symposium “Science in Times of Challenged Trust and Expertise” on May 16 aims to debate the challenges posed to science in its role as a trusted source of evidence and expertise. Renowned scholars and an international audience will discuss underlying causes and consequences of the alleged loss of trust, as well as questions on how scientific evidence can and should be acquired and communicated across academic disciplines and traditions.

The Symposium "Shaping European Science Advice: Insights and Experiences" on May 17, organised by SAPEA (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies), will explore science advice for policy, and how we can learn from experience to shape the future of policy advice. A wide range of different national perspectives on science advice systems will be examined. This will be followed by discussions of recent examples of scientific advice that have been produced by the European Commission’s High Level Group of Scientific Advisors, in collaboration with SAPEA.

The All European Academies Madame de Staël Prize for Cultural Values is awarded to eminent scholars whose work represents a significant contribution to the cultural and intellectual values of Europe and to the idea of European integration. The 2018 ALLEA Madame de Staël Prize will be awarded to Professor Andrea Pető (Central European University) to honour her wide-ranging scholarly work on gender studies and European contemporary history.

The event is open to the public and free of charge (Registration is mandatory).
