In clear violation of the ‘one country, two systems’ principle of the Sino-British Joint Declaration, China has now passed legislation directly curtailing the freedoms once granted to the citizens of Hong Kong. We can expect tough resistance from Hong Kong’s democracy movement, and further attempts by the Chinese Communist Party to strengthen its power over the autonomous area.
