Event Description
The Department of International Health is organising in collaboration with renowned partners a conference entitled European Public Health. 20 years of the Maastricht Treaty – Turning past experiences into visions on 22 & 23 May 2013 in Maastricht.
The Maastricht Treaty of 1992 introduced a public health mandate for the European Union. The last 20 years have witnessed exciting developments to flesh out the mandate. The Treaty has been the basis for important joint and coordinated public health actions.
However, we are facing huge challenges in public health and healthcare due to the demographic transition, social inequalities and the financial crisis in Europe. Does the mandate live up to the challenges of the future? Or do we have to adapt the mandate not only because public health and healthcare problems are changing but also given recent discussions on the future architecture of the EU itself?
We take stock of past EU actions related to health and discuss how we should tackle recent and future challenges in Europe. What is the EU’s added value for public health?
