The Renovation Wave presented by Bioenergy Europe
Section
Event Description
A central initiative within the European Green Deal and Green Recovery Package, the Renovation Wave will play a key role in driving both Europe’s economic recovery and energy transition. On 5th November 2020, Bioenergy Europe invites policy and industry stakeholders to come together and discuss the potential challenges and opportunities that this initiative presents.
The building sector is not only the single largest energy consumer in Europe but is responsible for over 40% of energy consumption and 36% of GHG emissions. Moreover, the sector continues to rely heavily on fossil fuels, accounting for almost 80% of its fuel consumption. Characterised by old and inefficient systems, the modernisation of the heating sector is an essential part of the initiative that will drive its decarbonisation.
Bioenergy is the driving solution in this transition to increased energy efficiency. Modern biomass appliances and biomass-based networks offer a much-needed integrated approach to carbon-neutrality. Upgrading the existing heating stock, as well as promoting new installations, will both secure the achievement of the 2030 energy efficiency targets while furthering Europe’s fight against pollution. Through the upskilling and reskilling of installers and retailers, alongside the provision of tailor-made heating solutions for households, the Renovation Wave will provide high-skilled job opportunities while simultaneously influence consumer behaviour – a critical means of promoting the increased energy efficiency of buildings.
As part of the Switch4Air campaign, Bioenergy Europe presents the unique opportunity for policy and industry stakeholders to come together to explore the Renovation Wave and its objectives.
Speakers:
- Karlis Goldstein (Energy Efficiency Advisor, DG ENER, European Commission) will present these objectives with a specific focus on the heating sector.
- Giulia Cancian (Policy Director, Bioenergy Europe) will then offer an exploration of the challenges and opportunities that the Renovation Wave presents for the bioenergy sector as a whole.
- Kamila Waciega (Director Energy, Veolia) examines the world of district heating and its potential to decarbonise the heating sector.
- Annalisa Paniz (Director of General Affairs and International Relations, AIEL) considers the possibilities of individual heating stock replacement, contributing to the scaling energy and reducing emissions.
