Event Description

Hosted by the Czech Permanent Representation in collaboration

with the Czech Society of Cardiology

Organized by the European Society of Cardiology, the European Diabetes Forum and the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations

Cardiovascular diseases and diabetes are leading causes of death globally. In the EU, more than 50 million people are currently living with cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and the mortality rate is relentlessly high. People with diabetes have an increased risk of CVD and even see their life expectancy drastically reduced by 10–14 years. Unfortunately, it is estimated that over 1 in 3 adults live with undiagnosed diabetes and do not receive any treatment, while 20-40% of heart attacks occur in people previously undiagnosed with CVD.

Overall, CVD is accountable for around 20% of all premature deaths (before the age of 65) in the EU, and it accounts for approximately ~16% of the healthcare expenditure in the EU[1], or €200bn. Earlier identification and better management is a key step to mitigate risk factors, reduce the risk of complications such as heart attacks, and address the disease burden long-term.

Building on the momentum created by the EU Healthier Together Initiative, this event aims to create a platform for discussions between EU and national-level stakeholders, to explore ways to improve the early detection of CVD and diabetes in order to reduce premature and preventable deaths.

Speakers include:

  • Host: Jakub Dvořáček, Deputy Minister, Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic
