15 July 2019, Bad Hofgastein, Austria – The European Health Forum Gastein released a detailed programme around its 2019 theme, “A healthy dose of disruption? Transformative change for health and societal well-being”.  Built on four tracks, the programme is meant to spur the dialogue on how an appropriate level of disruption can effectively revolutionise the health sector. The EHFG will take place from 2-4 October 2019, in Bad Hofgastein, Austria.

Setting the scene for the discussions, this year’s opening plenary promises a deep-dive into the concept of disruption beyond its technological implications. Prominent health actors will shed light on what disruption implies for them, while movers and shakers will reveal their ground-breaking ideas for health transformation. The disruptive nature of digital transformation will be the main focus of the EHFG’s Thursday plenary, while the closing plenary explores the interrelation between public health and the global climate crisis.

The conference features four tracks. “Disrupting innovation” aims to critically assess the efficacy, implementation, interoperability and ethical constraints of disruptive (digital) innovation. “System for change” delves into the role of health systems in ensuring the right dose of transformation, while “Future formulas” touches upon contemporary dilemmas for health and sustainability, from the debate on medical cannabis to the one on patient blood management. Finally, “Transforming societies” focuses on how the status quo of health can be changed by discussing global societal challenges like air pollution, inequality, and homelessness.

Among the high-level speakers at the EHFG 2019 are Brigitte Zarfl, Austria’s Minister of Labour, Social Affairs, Health and Consumer Protection, Vytenis Andriukaitis, European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Päivi Sillanaukee, Permanent Secretary at the Finnish Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, Daniel Calleja Crespo, Director-General at the European Commission’s Directorate General for Environment,  Anne Bucher, Director-General at the European Commission’s Directorate General for Health and Food Safety, and Rachel Melsom, UK and Europe Director at Tobacco Free Portfolios.

Finally, building on last year’s success, the EHFG will launch its second hackathon in partnership with EIT Health. The EHFG’s 2019 hackathon, starting on 1 October 2019, will focus on finding an innovative solution for the growing trend of vaccine hesitancy.
