Robert Madelin, Senior Policy Adviser on Innovation
Robert Madelin is one of the most influential actors on innovation policy in Europe. As Director General of DG Connect from 2012-2015 (‘Communications Networks, Content and Technology’), he has driven initiatives on the Digital Single Market, the Digital Economy, and related work on Future Emerging Technologies, the Internet of Things and digital skills. A Graduate of Magdalen College, Oxford and the Ecole Nationale d’Administration in Paris, Robert Madelin joined the European Commission in 1993 and held various other senior positions in trade, finance and investment, and health and consumer policies. In the last 18 months as Senior Adviser for Innovation to the President Jean-Claude Juncker, he conducted a strategic review on innovation policy in Europe and proposed priority actions including much more ‘cross-policy’ approaches to innovation and accelerated implementation. This is reflected in his latest report “Opportunity Now, Europe’s Mission to Innovate”, an exhortation for the European Union, national governments and industry actors to act.
