The coming months will be critical to put in place effective measures to decarbonise the shipping sector.

The IMO MEPC 77 (22-26 November) and the Glasgow COP26 summit (1-12 November) present a clear window of opportunity to take the necessary steps. On an EU level, members of the European Parliament will be discussing the European Commission proposal to include maritime transport under the existing ETS and the FuelEU Maritime proposal to promote sustainable shipping fuels.

Over 150 companies and organisations from across the maritime, finance and energy sectors have already called on the International Maritime Organization to commit to fully decarbonising shipping by 2050. An initiative led by the Getting to Zero Coalition calls on governments to collaborate with industry to generate the necessary policies and investments that can power the energy transition over the next few years.

In this event, members of the European Parliament and industry leaders will discuss the fastest road to decarbonisation.

We will hope to answer the question:

What can the EU do to push for a worldwide decarbonisation of this global sector?
