Event Description
The importance of Science in the agricultural sector is vital and the role of communicating this to a wider audience equally so. As the first Chief Scientific Adviser, Professor Glover’s role is to provide independent expert advice & analysis to the Commission whilst enhancing public confidence in pan-EU science initiatives. Rothamsted has been at the cutting edge of agricultural scientific research for 170 years; investing extensively in communication with key policy makers & stakeholders, helping to develop new thinking & approaches in this critical, yet often controversial, field of scientific research.
Join us at this breakfast briefing where Professor Glover, Dr Maloney and Dr Hughes discuss Science, Agriculture and Public Engagement followed by a moderated Q&A session.
Professor Glover is the Chief Scientific advisor to the President of the European Commission & Chair of the Science and Technology Advisory Council. She has previously served as first Chief Scientific Adviser for Scotland, advising the Scottish First Minister and was awarded a CBE in recognition of her services to environmental sciences in 2006.
Professor Angela Karp is Scientific Director of the Rothamsted Centre for Bioenergy and Climate Change. Her research focuses on optimising perennial biomass crops for bioenergy and biofuels. In 2007 she received the RASE Research Medal and, in 2008, the Alfred-Toepfer prize for research achievements in willow.
Dr. Darren Hughes is the acting Head of Communications & External Affairs at Rothamsted Research & will add to the discussion with his expert insight into the core issues faced in communicating developments within the Science sector to a wider audience. Previously attached to the UK Department of Health, he also has extensive knowledge of inter-governmental dialogue.
