Event Description

In the wake of the European Parliament elections, the EU is about to define its strategic agenda for the next five years. Both the EU and its Member States are confronting significant challenges related to competitiveness, democratic stability, and their geopolitical role, particularly in the aftermath of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. This conflict has not only called into question the EU's economic model but also highlighted the urgent need for a united voice at the European level.

France and Germany, as key players within the EU, bear a special responsibility in shaping this agenda. Their efforts are crucial to fostering prosperity, enhancing competitiveness, and transitioning the EU into a green and digital economy. In France, the European elections have already triggered major domestic political repercussions. President Emmanuel Macron’s call for snap elections has set the stage for a new government. Meanwhile, in Germany, with federal elections looming in autumn 2025, the rise of extremist parties from both the right and left has weakened the government’s position.

This climate of political uncertainty raises several key questions: how can France and Germany lead the charge in advancing an ambitious EU agenda? How can they continue to strengthen their bilateral cooperation and build upon initiatives like the Draghi report and political guidelines that aim to boost competitiveness by reducing bureaucratic hurdles for small and medium enterprises, decarbonizing the EU’s industry through strategic public investments, and fostering innovation across Europe? Furthermore, how can France, Germany, and the EU collaborate to advance the European Defence Union, enhancing the EU’s preparedness in defence and improve the EU’s resilience in cybersecurity, and internal security?

Join us for an engaging debate, in which we aim to offer insights into the perspective of the newly elected parliament, reflect on the achievements of the last mandate, and explore the priorities that lie ahead.
