Trade for democracy in South-East Asia

Event Description
The European Commission’s “Trade for All” strategy aims at increasing the effectiveness and transparency of the EU’s trade policy, as well as promoting the respect of European values and responsible practices among trade partners.
The Commission aspires to greater trade ties with the whole ASEAN region, building on country-specific bilateral agreements. However, compliance with the European social and regulatory model within ASEAN member countries can differ.
Researches show that stronger trade ties with the EU have so far helped countries like Myanmar and the Philippines move towards economic growth, social progress, and democratic development; whereas such conditions are not yet fully met with Malaysia and Thailand.
- To what extent do trade restrictions encourage compliance with European values?
- What other engagements can be taken to ensure that trade partners commit to safe and sustainable supply chains?
EurActiv Institute is pleased to invite you to a high-level conference to explore answers to these questions.
