Rising to the challenge: time for action on cardiovascular health

Wed, 2024-10-23 09:31
18 Nov 2024 16:00At present, more than 60 million people in the EU live with cardiovascular diseases (CVD), which remain the main cause of death and disability in Europe, accounting for over €282 billion in healthcare expenditure in the EU every year. The upcoming Council Conclusions on cardiovascular health (CVH) that the Hungarian Presidency is working on, along with the inclusion of CVD in both the European Commission President’s political guidelines and the Mission Letter to the Commissioner-Designate for Health signal a much welcome political commitment towards improving cardiovascular health (CVH) in Europe. Building on this momentum, this event aims to provide a platform for discussion between EU and national-level stakeholders to explore ways to address CVH in Europe, reduce mortality and morbidity, and improve the quality of life of people living with or at risk of CVD. This event will explore how to best focus EU-level action towards the unmet needs of the cardiovascular community and ensure that the new EU mandate puts forward the right tools to support the communities and the Member States in promoting CVH. The event will also see the participation of representatives of the national Health Ministries, to draw on national best practices and on the learnings of countries that have recently developed national cardiovascular health plans or other strategies to tackle CVD. The event will be moderated by Prof. Michal Vrablik, Professor of Internal Medicine at Charles University in Prague, the Czech Republic. Speakers will include Members of the European Parliament, representatives from the European Commission, representatives of the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the EU and patient representatives. We will welcome guests from 15:30 for a coffee. The event will be followed by a networking reception. Please join us and stay tuned for more details: https://www.cardiovascular-alliance.eu/rising-to-the-challenge-time-for-...

Bridging the Gap: Advancing Psoriasis Care in Europe

Thu, 2024-10-17 08:59
29 Oct 2024 13:00

The virtual roundtable, entitled "Bridging the Gap: Advancing Psoriasis Care in Europe" sponsored by Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) will take place on World Psoriasis Day, October 29, 2024, at 13.00 – 14.15 (CET).

This roundtable discussion will focus on addressing critical gaps and opportunities in the psoriasis care pathway, focusing on the European region. The webcast will be available in English, interested participants are invited to register now.

This important discussion comes following the publication of the Economist Impact report “Beyond skin-deep: tackling gaps in psoriasis care” which examines challenges and opportunities across the psoriasis care pathway in the France, Italy, Spain, Germany, United Kingdom, the United States, China, and Japan and how health systems can better meet patients’ needs.

The report, commissioned and supported by BMS, emphasizes psoriasis is a serious, chronic, non-communicable autoimmune disease. Psoriasis is not only a painful and stigmatizing illness, but is also associated with many serious, systemic comorbidities. Moreover, many patients report experiencing a significant detrimental impact on quality of life and overall health. However, despite its widespread prevalence, the report finds psoriasis to be misunderstood, under-resourced, underdiagnosed, and undertreated.

The roundtable will bring together policy experts, healthcare providers, patients, and advocates to discuss the policy recommendations from the Economist Impact report, and highlight the need for their implementation at the local and regional level. Key topics include undertreatment, promotion of shared decision-making, and understanding the burden of comorbidities.

  • Dr. Tiago Torres, Professor of Dermatology at University of Porto, Portugal
  • Antonio Manfredi, Psoriasis patient and advocate for ACCIÓN PSORIASIS, Spain
  • Ilse Van Ee, Psoriasis patient and advocate for Psoriasispatiënten Nederland, Netherlands
  • Penilla Gunther, Former Swedish politician and FOKUS Patient founder, Sweden
  • Rene Wyndham, Moderator and Broadcaster
  • Jasmine Greenamyer, Vice President, Global Patient Outreach, BMS, United States

Don't miss this opportunity to be part of a meaningful discussion across various stakeholders on how to address ongoing gaps in care for the psoriasis patient community.

Register now to join us on October 29, 2024, at 13.00 – 14.15 (CET)!

EU Flu Day 2024 – 15 years on: Updating the EU’s 75% uptake target to manage the triple threat of Flu, COVID-19, and RSV

Wed, 2024-09-25 12:59
25 Sep 2024 15:00

The annual EU Flu Day is back! 15 years after the adoption of the 2009 Council Recommendation on Season Influenza Vaccination, the 2024 edition of EU Flu Day will discuss how leveraging data and digitalisation can help achieve the EU’s 75% vaccination uptake for influenza and expand it to include RSV, and COVID-19 considering the evolving public health landscape.

Hosted at the European Parliament by MEP András Kulja (EPP, HU) and joined by MEP Dolors Montserrat (EPP, ES), co-chair of the Steering Group on Influenza Vaccination, institutional and disease experts, health professionals and patients will explore how timely, harmonised data collection on flu, COVID-19, and RSV can help inform evidenced based policy through a better understanding of barriers to vaccination. Digital tools including electronic vaccination registries are increasingly essential for building public trust, supporting vaccine delivery, and ultimately driving data-driven public health actions.

Don’t miss it! The event, organised by the Steering Group on Influenza Vaccination, will be the forum for insightful discussion on how to leverage these tools and strategies to boost vaccination rates and protect public health across Europe.

European Green Deal 2.0: A Better Bargain for Climate and Competitiveness

Wed, 2024-09-25 09:03
02 Oct 2024 12:15

Five years in, the European Green Deal remains the EU’s flagship project aiming to decarbonise the economy and spur economic growth. Regrettably, the EU is in a completely different financial and geopolitical position compared to 2019 while its track record on climate and energy is far from convincing. We already see clear signals that the current framework is neither generating “green growth” nor putting the continent on a fast-track towards net zero.

Spiralling fiscal costs, a scarcity of vital energy and natural resources, and increasing societal strain, all risk derailing the clean energy transition. The EU needs to keep its decarbonisation drive towards carbon neutrality in the upcoming mandate, but be prepared to adjust its policy priorities in order to achieve its monumental climate and environmental goals.

Is decarbonisation becoming a structural challenge for European energy security and price stability? What kind of policy pivot do we need to ensure that the Green Deal makes a successful business case for European enterprises and industry? How can the European institutions guarantee that the drive toward sustainability doesn’t become financially and societally unsustainable?

Europe’s Nuclear Dilemma: Evaluating the Need for a Common European Nuclear Deterrent

Wed, 2024-09-25 09:01
01 Oct 2024 15:00

The current security environment in Europe is characterised by increasing complexity and unpredictability. The unprovoked invasion of Ukraine by Russia has exposed Europe’s security vulnerabilities and has heightened concerns about the nuclear threat posed by Moscow, especially in the Black Sea region. Nuclear weapons remain the central pillar of European defence and security policy. Most European states rely on NATO’s nuclear umbrella for collective protection, mainly under US leadership, while some countries, such as France, maintain a strictly national approach to nuclear issues.

The rise of revisionist powers, which challenge the Western-led liberal world order, poses a new dual challenge to Euro-Atlantic security and NATO’s extended nuclear deterrent. Coupled with the shift in US foreign policy dynamics towards the Indo-Pacific and possibly the adoption of a more isolationist approach in the international affairs, there is an urgent need for a thorough reassessment of the role of nuclear weapons in Europe.

To discuss the potential need for a collective European nuclear deterrent (END), while ensuring the preservation of both the North Atlantic Alliance and the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) framework, the Martens Centre invites you to the launch of a paper, authored by Adérito Vicente, which critically assesses the feasibility and necessity of establishing a common European nuclear deterrent, and explores the challenges and opportunities associated with such an initiative. A commentary and debate will follow the presentation of the paper.

Connecting Addictions and Cardiovascular Health in Europe

Mon, 2024-09-23 10:07
02 Oct 2024 09:30

The Institute for Rational Addiction Policies is hosting a roundtable, "Connecting Addictions and Cardiovascular Health in Europe."

Cardiovascular diseases account for nearly 12% of the EU's total health burden, causing over 6 million new cases and 1.8 million deaths each year. Holding the current Presidency of the Council of the EU, Hungary has made cardiovascular health one of the key priorities on its agenda. European Commission's President Ursula von der Leyen has also recently included prevention of cardiovascular diseases in her political agenda. As a result, policymakers should increasingly focus on addressing the root causes of these diseases, including the consumption of harmful substances.

At the same time, poor mental health plays a significant role in public health challenges. Addictions to alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drugs are closely linked to mental health issues, often creating a cycle that increases the risk of cardiovascular conditions. Therefore, tackling these interconnected issues is essential for improving health outcomes across Europe.

The start of a new EU mandate presents a crucial opportunity to discuss cardiovascular diseases, addictions, and mental health while highlighting evidence-based policy solutions. This event provides a platform to exchange ideas and define key priorities for addressing these topics in a holistic way at the EU level.

The key speakers at the event include:

  • Mgr. Jindřich Vobořil, Pg.Dip., Director of the Institute for Rational Addiction Policies (IRAP), former Czech Anti-Drug Coordinator and Advisor to the Czech Prime Minister.
  • Prof. Ing. Danuše Nerudová, Ph.D., Member of the European Parliament and Substitute in the ENVI Committee.
  • Mgr. et Mgr. Helena Gherasim, Head of the Association of Providers of Addiction Services (APAS).
  • Michael Fanta Ph.D., Chief Analyst at Centre for Economic and Market Analysis (CETA), Lecturer and Researcher at Anglo-American University in Prague (AAU).
