At its General Affairs meetings, the Council deals with subjects that cover numerous EU policy areas, such as negotiations on EU enlargement, preparation of the Union's multi-annual budgetary outlook or institutional and administrative issues.

The Foreign Affairs Council sets the course for the EU's external action and ensures the coherence of the EU’s different efforts in the area. The Council deals with issues concerning the common foreign and security policy, security and defence cooperation, trade and development policy.

The Agriculture and Fisheries Council brings together every month Member States’ ministers responsible for fisheries and agriculture.

 

It discusses issues relating to agriculture and fisheries, including food safety, animal health, animal welfare and plant health.

 

The Economic and Financial Affairs Council ("Ecofin") is composed of the Economics and Finance Ministers of the Member States, as well as Budget Ministers when budgetary issues are discussed. It meets once a month.

 

he Eurogroup, composed of the Member States whose currency is the euro, meets normally the day before the Economic and Financial Affairs Council meeting and deals with issues relating to the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU).

The official launch event of the Irish presidency of the Council of the EU will take place in Dublin.
