Franco-German Impulses for the EU’s Strategic Agenda 2024-2029
In the wake of the European Parliament elections, the EU is about to define its strategic agenda for the next five years. Both the EU and its Member States are confronting significant challenges related to competitiveness, democratic stability, and their geopolitical role, particularly in the aftermath of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. This conflict has not only called into question the EU's economic model but also highlighted the urgent need for a united voice at the European level.
France and Germany, as key players within the EU, bear a special responsibility in shaping this agenda. Their efforts are crucial to fostering prosperity, enhancing competitiveness, and transitioning the EU into a green and digital economy. In France, the European elections have already triggered major domestic political repercussions. President Emmanuel Macron’s call for snap elections has set the stage for a new government. Meanwhile, in Germany, with federal elections looming in autumn 2025, the rise of extremist parties from both the right and left has weakened the government’s position.
This climate of political uncertainty raises several key questions: how can France and Germany lead the charge in advancing an ambitious EU agenda? How can they continue to strengthen their bilateral cooperation and build upon initiatives like the Draghi report and political guidelines that aim to boost competitiveness by reducing bureaucratic hurdles for small and medium enterprises, decarbonizing the EU’s industry through strategic public investments, and fostering innovation across Europe? Furthermore, how can France, Germany, and the EU collaborate to advance the European Defence Union, enhancing the EU’s preparedness in defence and improve the EU’s resilience in cybersecurity, and internal security?
Join us for an engaging debate, in which we aim to offer insights into the perspective of the newly elected parliament, reflect on the achievements of the last mandate, and explore the priorities that lie ahead.

Bridging the Gap: The New Pan-European Observatory as a Catalyst for EHDS implementation
On 26 September, the Health Outcomes Observatory (H2O) is hosting a hybrid event in Vienna and online, bringing together HTA agencies, researchers, industry representatives and patients from across Europe. This gathering will explore how the recently launched H2O Pan-European Observatory can play a pivotal role in aligning digitally captured patient outcomes with the European Health Data Space (EHDS) legislation.
As a key player in connecting data from national health outcomes observatories, the Pan-European Observatory stands to be a catalyst for EHDS implementation, empowering Europe to harness the potential of health data sourced directly from patients. The event will feature three roundtables that offer a unique platform for discussions on how standardized patient data can drive evidence-based research and policymaking. Report Launch: Grand Challenges for Europe in 2050
ABOUT THE EVENT
At the end of the first quarter of the 21st century, Europe is in what has been called a "polycrisis": War has returned to Europe, with no realistic prospect of ending soon. Europe is a rapidly warming continent, a crisis with even less perspective of being resolved in the years to come. Europe is an ageing and a shrinking continent, which significantly affects the European economy. Economic insecurity, fears of losing social status, perceptions of excessive inequality and distrust of politics lead to more and more people voting for the far right.
FNF’s Grand Challenges for Europe 2050 Report aims to provide a human-centred horizon scan of Europe in 2050. The report identifies and addresses challenges faced by individuals of different age groups in 2050. It highlights the interconnected challenges of transitioning to a future state, emphasising the broad perspective needed.
Join us as political entrepreneur and author of the report, Josef Lentsch, presents his key findings and exchange with liberal minds about the grand challenges ahead on Europe’s road to 2050.
ABOUT PROJECT EUROPE 2050

With new EU policymakers set to take office this year, political attention is now on energy independence, industrialisation, competitiveness, and the ongoing climate battle.
Power Barometer 2024 takes stock of these critical developments and more. Join industry leaders and policymakers as we explore:
- Industrial Electrification – Unlocking the massive potential for electrification
- Decarbonisation and Climate Change – Assessing the progress and the hurdles
