The European Parliament elections in May 2014 will be the most important to date. With the new powers of the European Parliament under the Lisbon Treaty, a new majority will shape EU policies in many important areas. It will also be the first time the new majority will formally “elect” the Commission president.

Simon Hix is a leading scholar in the area of European parliament and democracy in the EU. He has written a SIEPS study focusing on 10 key votes in the current European Parliament. He is founder and chairman of the independent organisation VoteWatch. At this seminar, Simon Hix will analyse political behaviour in the current European Parliament and give an outlook to possible outcomes and implications of the elections in May.
