Event Description
The Cefic Aromatics Sector Group (APA) is organizing a symposium on benzene and its health effect, to be held on 11 September 2019, from 14:30 to 18:30, at the Crowne Plaza Helsinki – Hesperia hotel in Helsinki, Finland. Thanks to a better understanding of benzene’s health effects, several organisations have revised their recommendations for its occupational exposure limit (OEL), an upper limit on the acceptable concentration of a substance in workplace air. The event aims at sharing insights on how available human data can be interpreted to better understand benzene’s impacts on health in order to define a safe exposure level.
The event is targeted to stakeholders from academia, regulatory authorities and industry that work on the health and safety assessment of benzene.
- Speaker from academia on quality assessment of epidemiology studies. Speaker to be confirmed.
- Speaker from RAC/ECHA on the process and derivation of an OEL for benzene in RAC (confirmed).
- Rob Schnatter/Steve Williams (Penman consulting); industry study. Developing a benzene OEL using study quality assessment tools (confirmed).
- William Tailler (DG Emp, Health and Safety): How to go from a scientific opinion to a legally binding OEL for Europe (confirmed).
- Panel discussion and questions from audience.
