The Justice and Home Affairs (JHA) Council brings together the justice and home affairs Ministers, approximately every other month. Justice Ministers deal with judicial cooperation, while home affairs Ministers are responsible for migration policy, border management, police cooperation and civil protection among other matters.

The General Affairs Council coordinates the meetings of the European Council. Meeting once a month, it is mainly made up of European Affairs Ministers. This Council configuration deals with dossiers that affect more than one of the Union's policies, such as negotiations on EU enlargement, preparation of the Union's multi-annual financial framework or institutional and administrative issues.

The role of the Competitiveness Council is to ensure the enhancement of competitiveness and growth in Europe. The Council meets four times annually and deals with the fields of the internal single market, industry, space, research and innovation. The development of the single market is one of the main policy areas for the competitiveness council and the year of 2012 marks the 20th anniversary of its completion.
